Mitragyna speciosa, also known as Kratom, Thom, Ketum or Kratum, is a tropical tree that grows in Southeast Asia and belongs to the same family as coffee (Rubiaceae). The Dutch botanist Pieter Willem Korthals was the first who officially described the plant, already in the 1830's. The tree can grow between 3 and even 30 meters tall and about 5 meters wide. The leaves are dark green, oval and usually about 20 centimeters long, but they can also grow to be a meter long. Kratom is often categorized by the colour of the veins of the leaves (for instance red, green, white). These are our red strains.
The flower clusters are yellow. In the countries of origin (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines) the leaves are chewed by the native population.
The main alkaloids are: mitragynine, 7-hydroxymitragynine, paynantheine, speciociliatine, speciogynine.
