Ilex paraguariensis, also called Yerba Mate, Mate or Terere, is a caffeinated tree in the same family as Guayusa that grows in South America. The tree can be about 15 meters high. The leaves are 1 to 10 centimeters long and 3 to 5 centimeters wide. The flowers are small and green white, the fruits are red and 4 to 6 millimeters in diameter. In
the countries of origin (Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil, Bolivia,
Chile), the native population make tea from the dried leaves and twigs.
The main alkaloids are: caffeine, theobromine, theophylline.
Our Yerba Mate is high quality shredded dried leaf and twigs. Yerba Mate is best stored dry and sealed (not in the fridge).
